Diamond Mining
The name diamond is derived from the Latin word “diamas” and the Greek word “adams” which means indestructible. Diamond is a naturally occurring hard precious mineral made of carbon. It is formed 100 miles below the earth’s surface under extreme heat and pressure. The diamond is the modern birthstone of April and holds significant mean- ing for those born in that month, thought to provide the wearer with better relationships and an increase in inner strength.


Sapphire Mining
The name sapphire is derived from the Latin word “saphi- rus” and the Greek word “sapheiros”, both meaning blue. The sapphire is the birthstone for the month of September. Sapphire is located in the Awat, Adi Shimbru and Getar Chela kebeles in the net district of the Tigray region of Ethiopia. It is also found in the Guji area of Oromia region, the southem region and other areas.


Emerald Mining
This precious mineral represents the birthstone of May.Ethiopia produces emeralds with a wide range of quality. In Ethiopia, the emerald was known by artisanal miners in 2008 in Oromi region, Guji zone, and Sababoru district. It is found in Borena and its sur- roundings. Emerald is mainly used in jewellery like rings, bracelets, nucleus and for preparing the deco- rative items, etc. High quality emeralds are used as ring stones and beads. The beauty of Ethiopian, s emeralds is exceptional.


Ruby Mining
The name ruby comes from the Latin word ruber, which means red. The Ruby gemstone is one of the four main precious gemstones. Ruby is the July birthstone. Ruby is a gemstone that is mostly bright red and purplish red in color. Ruby is found in Sidama and Southern regions of Ethiopia, especially the Burji area and other areas. Ruby is a gem that has long been used in jewelry. It is used for rings, ears, necklaces and bracelets. Ruby is consid- ered a symbol of love and commitment.


Opal Mining
The word opal is derived from the Indian Sanskrit word upala. It has recently been represented as the birthstone of October. Opal is one of the worlds most beautiful and pre- cious gemstones that comes in a variety of colors. Opal is widely used in jewelry. Ethiopian opal was first discovered in Amhara Regional Sate, northern Shewa around Menze in the early 1990s. The next major discovery occurred in 2008 E.C, when white precious opal was found in Wollo near Wegel Tena.Opal is abundantly found in the Amhara region.


Topaz Mining
The name topaz comes from the Greek word “topazion” and the Sanskrit word “tapas” which means “fire”.Topaz represents the birthstone of December. Topaz is the hardest of all Silicate minerals which is created from a combination of aluminium and fluorine. Topaz comes in wide range of colors including, blue, brown, green, gold, and pink, red, white and yellow.It is called topazion in the Bible. It is widely found in Guji zone and in Oromia region of Ethiopia. .


Agate Mining
Agate comes from the rock formation class of Chalcedony and also quartz. This mineral is called chalcedony in the Bible. Agate is abundantly found in Tigray, South and Oromia regions of Ethiopia. It is also available in other regions.Agate is cut and polished to make necklaces, bracelets, beads and various jewelry. Agate comes in a variety of colors and is a popular gemstone. It has white, blue, red, green, yellow, orange, brown, pink, purple, gray and black colors.


Amethyst Mining
The name amethyst derives from the ancient Greek word amethustos. It is the birthstone for February. Amethyst is suitable for all types of jewelry making. It is used to make earrings, bracelets and rings, bracelets or beads. Amethyst is found in different parts of Ethiopia. However, it is mostly found in the south and Oromia region.Amethyst is a type of quartz mineral that is usually purple in color.Amethyst is suitable for all types of jewelry making.


Amber Mining
Amber is fossilized tree resin that sometimes contains animals and plant material. The Ethiopian amber is the first major discovery of its kind from the African continent. The deposits for this amber type were discovered in the Debre Libanos Sandstone Unit near a town called Alem Ketema north of Addis Ababa. The most beautiful amber is found in the North Showa area of the Amhara region.

The name “garnet” comes from the Latin word “Garanatus,” meaning ‘seedlike’, in reference. Garnet is the birthstone for January. This precious mineral is found in abundance in the south and Oromia region and is found in small amounts in other areas. Garnets are commonly red but also come in an extraordinary range of beautiful colours, including orange, yellow, purple and vibrant green.


Apatite Mining
Apatite is a calcium phosphate mineral found in a variety of colors such as yellow, blue, green, gray, and brown. The most important colors are blue, green, and gold. Apatite is abundant in Oromia and Southern regions of Ethiopia and is also found in other areas. This mineral is used to make jewelry and is also used as a source of phosphate for fertilizer and other industrie uses.


Peridot Mining
The word peridot comes from the Arabic “faridat,” which means “gem.” Peridot is the birthstone for the month of August. Peridot is a type of olivine. Peridot is found in abundance in the south and Oromia region. It is also thought to be found in other parts of Ethiopia. Peridot is mostly green in color with yellow or greenish yellow. Peridots is common in many pieces of jewelry from necklaces and rings to earrings and bracelets.

It serves as the birthstone for the month of March. Aquamarine is found in Oromia and Southern region of Ethiopia. Aquamarine is greenish blue and blue in color.


Jasper Mining
This semi-precious mineral is called eyaspide in the Bible. Jasper is a member of the quartz mineral family and has the characteristics of a silica composition that gives the stones an opaque appearance. It is found in enormous deposit in Amhara, Oromia and Southern regions of Ethiopia. This semi-precious stone is usually brown in color.

Obsidian is a glass-like rock that forms above the earth’s surface when molten rock erupts in a volcano and cools rapidly. Black is the most common color, but it can also be found in blue, gray, green, or yellow colors, among others. Obsidian is found in Tigray, Amhara, Oromia, Afar, Sidama, southern regions and other places in Ethiopia.
