The name sapphire is derived from the Latin word “saphi- rus” and the Greek word “sapheiros”, both meaning blue. The sapphire is the birthstone for the month of September. Sapphire is located in the Awat, Adi Shimbru and Getar Chela kebeles in the net district of the Tigray region of Ethiopia. It is also found in the Guji area of Oromia region, the southem region and other areas.

The word emerald is derived from the Greek smaragus’ which means green pearl. This precious mineral represents the birthstone of May.Ethiopia produces emeralds with a wide range of quality. In Ethiopia, the emerald was known by artisanal miners in 2008 in Oromi region, Guji zone, and Sababoru district. It is found in Borena and its sur- roundings.

Opal is one of the worlds most beautiful and pre- cious gemstones that comes in a variety of colors. Opal is widely used in jewelry. Ethiopian opal was first discovered in Amhara Regional Sate, northern Shewa around Menze in the early 1990s.

Topaz Mining

The name topaz comes from the Greek word “topazion” and the Sanskrit word “tapas” which means “fire”.Topaz represents the birthstone of December. Topaz is the hardest of all Silicate minerals which is created from a combination of aluminium and fluorine. Topaz comes in wide range of colors including, blue, brown, green, gold, and pink, red, white and yellow.It is called topazion in the Bible.

Gobdad Gold Mining

Very limited geological investigations, intended for different purposes have been conducted by different institutions and researchers in the south western region of Ethiopia, particularly different mineral exploration works for gold studies were carried out in the area: An Italian Gold Mining Company, Kommina 1934-1940, the company has done Placer Gold and Copper Exploration on kolu valleys, approves 400,000 metric tons copper originated Kolu Rift valley creek and Adikas Village Kalum sight  Kibish River creek. Akobo River and its tributaries approve 243698kg Gold gravelly in 1934-1940. The Eastern Bank of Akobo River these includes Adikas village and Kari River at Tirima Tid Wereda Zilimamo sub werda 1939 and Maji Awuraja  Mehal Maji Werda Adikas Kebele Kalum Seiru mountain around Kibish River and Kendibabe and Gassana creeks.

The exploration area is located at South West Ethiopian Peoples National Regional State, West Omo Region, Maji Wereda Gold Mining Industrial Zone, Adikas kebele kalum, Seru, and Kolu Kebele kanu locality. Systematic exploration techniques were employed to delineate the Placer Gold deposit stands recording as above reported An Italian Gold Mining Company, Kommina 1934-1940 identical great quantity and evaluate the reserve of Gold in the area. Geological maps preparation, resource map delineation and pit excavation were the main task carried out in the exploration and this company evaluate   the deposit of   Copper ,Metal  ,marble ,limestone and natural oil founded   around   Adikas and kolu   locations .

The study areas is done at each blocks, block 1 Adikas and block 2 Kolu stream with 9.54 km2 tributary to Key wuha ( Red Water ) and Wash wuha ( Cavern Water ) tributary rivers or Kibish Water.

A total of 50 hits were sunk along 43 profile lines at 40 meters interval and average 200m profile line spacing (200X40) at two blocks. Pits are dug manually, re-log old pits and reach up to the bed rock. Circular pits were dug manually.
